What is a KPS Test?
A Keys Per Second (KPS) test measures exactly how fast you can press keys on your keyboard. While average users type between 2 to 4 KPS during normal sentence writing, competitive gamers and esports players can burst up to 15-20 KPS in rhythmic or intense gaming scenarios.
What Is a Good KPS?
Use this scale to see where your speed stands. Your personal best for each mode is saved in your browser, and top results in osu!mania and Time Attack show how many players you beat.
KPS Rating Scale
Under 4 KPS — 🐌 Warming up · 4–7 — 🙂 Average
7–10 — 👍 Fast · 10–13 — 💪 Very fast
13–16 — 🔥 Pro · 16–20 — ⚡ Godlike
20+ KPS — 🏆 Inhuman
Why Is My KPS So High?
Classic mode counts every key, so pressing several keys at once multiplies your score: results above 30 KPS come from mashing, not tapping. For a fair number, use osu!mania mode, where only your bound keys count, or Time Attack.
How to use the osu!mania Mode?
Rhythm game players use specific key layouts. Our osu!mania mode supports 4K, 5K, 6K, and 7K with customizable keybinds — only your chosen keys will register, filtering out accidental presses. Playing osu! standard? The osu! Tapping Test measures your 2-key stream BPM and unstable rate.
Recommended Gear for High KPS
If you're noticing your keystrokes aren't registering as fast as you tap, you may be bottlenecked by keyboard polling rates. Keyboards featuring Rapid Trigger technology or linear Silver switches are highly recommended for achieving maximum KPS.
How is KPS calculated?
While you type, the big number is your live speed over your last 15 keystrokes, so it reacts instantly. When you stop, it stays on the speed you finished at, and the Average KPS box shows your result for the whole burst, from first key to last key (keys minus one, divided by the seconds between them). In Time Attack, your result is total keys divided by the time limit, so 30 keys in 5 seconds is 6.00 KPS. Your rating and personal best always use that result.
